Matinee privacy policy
Last updated: 19 October 2026
The short version
Matinee keeps your library on your own computer. There's no Matinee account and no Matinee server. We never see your videos, folders, notes or viewing, and we don't sell or share anything.
What Matinee stores, and where
Everything below stays in your Chrome profile on your own computer:
- Your library: the videos you save (title, channel, length, thumbnail link), your folders, tags, notes, moments, where you stopped watching, and what you've watched.
- Your settings, such as the theme, backup schedule and looks, and, if you add one, your YouTube API key (kept encrypted on this computer).
- Monthly usage counts (for example, how many videos you saved by right-click). They're shown to you in Settings → Your Matinee and are never sent anywhere.
- Backups are files on your computer: in Downloads/Matinee, or in a folder you choose, which could be a synced folder such as Dropbox or iCloud Drive if you pick one.
Matinee keeps each saved video's description on your computer, to help you find it again.
Removing Matinee from Chrome deletes the library from Chrome. Your backup files stay where they are.
What leaves your computer, and why
Matinee makes these requests, and only these:
| To | When | What's sent | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
YouTube (www.youtube.com) | When you save a video you haven't opened, and now and then for saved videos | The video's id | To get its title and channel, and to check it's still available ("Gone from YouTube") |
YouTube's image servers (i.ytimg.com, and YouTube's other image addresses on ytimg.com, ggpht.com and googleusercontent.com) | When a thumbnail is shown | The video's id, in the picture's address | To show the video's thumbnail |
| YouTube, through your own signed-in tab | Only when you choose Import from YouTube | Requests YouTube's own pages make, from your tab | To read your Watch Later and playlists. Importing only reads them; Matinee never changes your YouTube account |
Google's YouTube Data API (www.googleapis.com) | Only if you add your own API key | Video ids and your key | To fill in fuller details, such as length |
Matinee uses no analytics, no tracking, no advertising and no remote code.
On-device AI
Folder suggestions are off unless you turn them on (Settings → On-device AI). When they're on, an import offers a "Suggest folders" button for the videos it couldn't file by channel. If you press it, Matinee gives Chrome's built-in AI model (Gemini Nano) your folder names (including any new ones the import will make) and the titles and channels of those videos, and the model suggests a folder for each. You check every suggestion before anything is saved.
The model runs on your own computer. Google's documentation for it says: "No data is sent to Google or any third party when using the model" (Chrome's Prompt API). Matinee sends nothing for this either. So nothing from your library leaves your computer for this, and none of it reaches Google or any AI service that could use it for training.
If the model isn't already on your computer, turning suggestions on has Chrome download it from Google, as it would for any site using Chrome's built-in AI. That download only brings the model to your computer; nothing from your library goes out with it.
Your choices
- Export your library at any time (Settings → Export) and delete it by removing Matinee.
- The API key is optional.
Feedback
Settings → Help & feedback, and this website, link to our feedback form, a Google Form. It opens only when you choose to, Matinee sends nothing to it, and you answer only what you want to. What you write reaches us through Google, under Google's own privacy policy. You can email us instead.
Children
Matinee isn't directed at children under 13, and the extension collects no personal information from anyone.
This website
This website has no cookies, no analytics and no trackers, and asks nothing of any other site when a page loads. Its fonts are served from the site itself.
Cloudflare hosts the site and handles its requests, as any web host does; we don't add anything to that.
Sending the link to yourself and calendar reminders happen on your own device. Nothing about them reaches us.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published here with its date, and the Chrome Web Store listing will link to it.
